Let them heat cake
From the April 2012 edition of Northern Midlands and Southern Housing magazine: The Hills Review has revealed an urgent need for action to save millions from the frosty embrace of fuel poverty, prompting a host of organisations to back the author’s ‘call to arms’ but the Government’s response was rather lukewarm – a promise to consult later this year. Mark Cantrell reports
Nobody can accuse this Coalition government of dragging its feet when tough decisions are needed on those pressing questions of national concern.
Consider the blitzkrieg pace ministers have set implementing their deficit reducing austerity measures, then there’s social housing and welfare reform, downsizing the public sector, even that pasty tax, to tell us here is a government that knows what it wants – and isn’t afraid to take it.
So when it comes to the issue of fuel poverty – accepted by the government as a “serious national problem” – rest assured that ministers are on the case. they’re going to launch a consultation on the issue in the summer.
